Pope Benedict is in trouble these days. There are new allegations that he covered up cases of sexual abuse in his former diocese near Munich. Infalability fail!
Now Richard Dawkins, the scientist and author of The God Delusion, is going to try to get the Pope arrested. It's sanctimonious atheist versus sanctimonious Catholic. From Reuters:
British author and atheist campaigner Richard Dawkins will try to have Pope Benedict arrested to face questions over the Catholic church's child abuse scandal when he visits Britain later this year, one of his lawyers said Sunday. Dawkins, a scientist and outspoken critic of religion, has asked human rights lawyers to examine whether charges could be brought against the pope.
Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and a couple of lawyers are going to explore the possibility of filing a claim in the International Criminal Court in the Netherlands, or maybe trying the Pope in the United Kingdom for "crimes against humanity." This may seem like a publicity stunt, but it's still true that the Catholic Church is harboring an extraordinary number of child molesters. More than any other institution, perhaps. If you strip away the spiritual dressing, it almost looks like a criminal organization or a version of NAMBLA. And we shouldn't let the Pope's claimed authority stop us from protecting thousands of children, right?
