It is 2013. You have been over-saturated with the “Arab Spring”.

You saw the Egyptian Revolution on the news two years ago and experienced coverage 24 hours a day. Do you really want to see a film that takes you back there… again?

Enough of the flag waving, the chanting, the crowds of people. Where did that get anyone?

Let me tell you why I think you should give The Square a chance.

When I arrived in Cairo, I was cynical. I had marched against the Iraq war in 2003, joined hundreds of thousands of people in the street and—nothing happened. I didn’t think a sit-in could change anything because in Cairo, anyone could be picked up and arrested or killed for protesting. I was proven wrong then, and that challenge to my belief has kept me in the square for the last two years filming with an incredible team of collaborators.

I make films because I see something that I believe must be shared with the world—even if it is just a glimpse, or a taste of it. The dedicated revolutionaries still fighting in the square and the cities around Cairo may seem like they are a world away, but when you hear them and see them, you see that they are closer to progress than you ever imagined.

Khalid Abdallah is the main person we follow throughout the The Square. As the founder of Mosireen, a Cairo media collective with the most highly watched non-profit Youtube channel in the world during the clashes in Egypt in November, he says the revolution is “An act of sight. Like a miracle, it makes visible what seemed beyond the horizon, bringing power structures into focus, reshaping what once appeared indestructible.”

Sanaa Seif, a young but wise revolutionary and filmmaker in our film said: “There is no way to overthrow all of these regimes unless everyone is revolting. Our revolution will never be achieved, in its true goals, unless there is a strong movement in America, because our politics are so related. You relate to the people’s struggle all over, you relate to the people facing brutality anywhere, because they’re going through the same thing.”

So by making this film we are inviting you to take a look from the inside out—rather than look from the outside in, through your American news sources. By supporting this story and helping us get it out there, you are helping courageous people fight the fight. Ahmed Hassan, another revolutionary who we follow in the film, told us what we were doing was important because we have grown up being lied to. “My hope is that if this film is able to reach people widely, we can give people—give our children—the truth. And if they are able to see the truth, they will be able to create a better world.”

We hope you’ll join us in this story, working towards that better world.

There is less than one day left on our Kickstarter. Every dollar you give will be matched by a donor, so your pledge will be doubled. When we release the film, you will be a part of a global celebration and the Egyptian revolution.

  • Man’s dog suddenly becomes protective of his wife, Internet clocks the reason right away

Reddit user Girlfriendhatesmefor’s three-year-old pitbull, Otis, had recently become overprotective of his wife. So he asked the online community if they knew what might be wrong with the dog.

“A week or two ago, my wife got some sort of stomach bug,” the Reddit user wrote under the subreddit /r/dogs. “She was really nauseous and ill for about a week. Otis is very in tune with her emotions (we once got in a fight and she was upset, I swear he was staring daggers at me lol) and during this time didn’t even want to leave her to go on walks. We thought it was adorable!”

His wife soon felt better, butthe dog’s behavior didn’t change.

Girlfriendhatesmefor began to fear that Otis’ behavior may be an early sign of an aggression issue or an indication that the dog was hurt or sick.

So he threw a question out to fellow Reddit users: “Has anyone else’s dog suddenly developed attachment/aggression issues? Any and all advice appreciated, even if it’s that we’re being paranoid!”

The most popular response to his thread was by ZZBC.

Any chance your wife is pregnant?

The potential news hit Girlfriendhatesmefor like a ton of bricks. A few days later, Girlfriendhatesmefor posted an update and ZZBC was right!

“The wifey is pregnant!” the father-to-be wrote. “Otis is still being overprotective but it all makes sense now! Thanks for all the advice and kind words! Sorry for the delayed reply, I didn’t check back until just now!”

    Redditors responded with similar experiences.

Anecdotal I know but I swear my dog knew I was pregnant before I was. He was super clingy (more than normal) and was always resting his head on my belly.

So why do dogs get overprotective when someone is pregnant?

Jeff Werber, PhD, president and chief veterinarian of the Century Veterinary Group in Los Angeles, told Health.com that “dogs can also smell the hormonal changes going on in a woman’s body at that time.” He added the dog may “not understand that this new scent of your skin and breath is caused by a developing baby, but they will know that something is different with you—which might cause them to be more curious or attentive.”

The big lesson here is to listen to your pets and to ask questions when their behavior abruptly changes. They may be trying to tell you something, and the news may be life-changing.

Why mass shootings spawn conspiracy theories

Mass shootings and conspiracy theories have a long history.

While conspiracy theories are not limited to any topic, there is one type of event that seems particularly likely to spark them: mass shootings, typically defined as attacks in which a shooter kills at least four other people.

When one person kills many others in a single incident, particularly when it seems random, people naturally seek out answers for why the tragedy happened. After all, if a mass shooting is random, anyone can be a target.

Pointing to some nefarious plan by a powerful group – such as the government – can be more comforting than the idea that the attack was the result of a disturbed or mentally ill individual who obtained a firearm legally.
