Forbes has calculated which stars cost far more than they're worth at the box office. Comedians do pretty badly on this scale. So does Tom Cruise.
For every $1 Will Ferrell was paid, his films returned an average $3.35.

Forbes took the amount an actor was paid and compared that to total gross of the films they star in. Being business folks, Forbes is essentially trying to calculate the return on investment of each actor, something I'm sure all the studio executives do each day. This list is only for the last three movies the stars were in, not lifetime averages, so Farrell took a big hit with his $100-million flop Land of the Lost. Another interesting finding in defense of Ferrell is that comedians do particularly badly, mainly because comedy doesn't translate as well overseas.
