Great design begins with brainstorming solutions to a problem. In the case of Pixar Animation Studios, this often means coming up with clever solutions to anthropomorphize characters. Animator Rob Gibbs narrates his experience working on the film Cars and his attempts to conjure up a way for Lightning McQueen to show a map to Sally when he has no hands to do so. Gibbs and his co-creators have fun thinking up ideas, including the use of a monkey hidden in the seats of McQueen’s body. In the end, their final solution is the simplest of them all.
