On three Thursdays over the past month—at our kickoff event on August 19, our discussion about enabling creativity on September 9, and our discussion about content on September 16—we've gathered to talk about ensuring that all kids are on track to receive the 21st century education they deserve.

Yesterday's final panel focused on how to urge students to set high expectations for academic achievement. The panelists were: JB Schramm (College Summit), Estelle Reyes (Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship), Paul Miller (Teach for America), and Steve Zimmer (Board of Education, LAUSD)

Raccoons break into liquor stores, scale skyscrapers and pick locks – studying their clever brains can clarify human intelligence, too

When a curious raccoon broke into an Ashland, Virginia, liquor store in December 2025, sampled the stock and passed out on the bathroom floor, the story went viral within minutes. The local animal shelter’s Facebook post was picked up by national and international outlets and quickly inspired raccoon-themed cocktails, “trashed panda” merchandise and even a cameo on “Saturday Night Live.”

For me, the story hit close to home. The store that hosted this inebriated bandit sits just blocks from the small behavioral neuroscience laboratory where I began investigating raccoon brains about 15 years ago. Although the so-called drunken raccoon made questionable decisions after breaking into the liquor store, the species – Procyon lotor – is known for its impressive intelligence, curiosity and problem-solving skills.

Could ChatGPT convince you to buy something? Threat of manipulation looms as AI companies gear up to sell ads

Eighteen months ago, it was plausible that artificial intelligence might take a different path than social media. Back then, AI’s development hadn’t consolidated under a small number of big tech firms. Nor had it capitalized on consumer attention, surveilling users and delivering ads.

Unfortunately, the AI industry is now taking a page from the social media playbook and has set its sights on monetizing consumer attention. When OpenAI launched its ChatGPT Search feature in late 2024 and its browser, ChatGPT Atlas, in October 2025, it kicked off a race to capture online behavioral data to power advertising. It’s part of a yearslong turnabout by OpenAI, whose CEO Sam Altman once called the combination of ads and AI “unsettling” and now promises that ads can be deployed in AI apps while preserving trust. The rampant speculation among OpenAI users who believe they see paid placements in ChatGPT responses suggests they are not convinced.

A new study claims dogs can learn new words by eavesdropping on their owners' conversations

While dogs can't speak English or any human language, people have developed ways to communicate with their furry friends over tens of thousands of years through evolution and training. If you're a dog owner, you likely know you have to be careful saying the word "treat" out loud, since you've used it while giving one to your dog, creating an association between the object and the sounds you're making.

However, a Hungarian and Austrian study found that some dogs were able to learn new words for objects they'd never actually seen before. In fact, these "gifted" dogs learn new words much like human toddlers.

Half of Americans say they've cut their screen time. And it's Gen Z leading the way, not Boomers.

A survey released in 2026 found that 50% of Americans say they’ve cut their screen time. Less time in front of phones, pads, laptops, televisions, everything. However, the generation leading the charge isn’t Boomers or Gen X, who have lived significantly longer without the Internet or social media, but the generation born into an already-online world.

Out of all the generations surveyed, Talker Research found that 63% of Gen Z made it a point to unplug and cut their screen time, followed by Millennials (57%), Gen X (42%), and then Baby Boomers (29%). Their reasons varied, but the folks surveyed said that having digital disconnection helped them feel more productive (42%), aware of what’s going on in their daily lives (33%), and present for their loved ones (33%).
